Austin with Young Kids

Thinking about moving to Austin with little ones? The best way to get a feel for the city is to spend a weekend living like a local family: parks and playgrounds, splash-friendly swimming holes, and casual restaurants where nobody minds a little noise. These are the spots I send my own clients to, grouped by part of town so you can explore a different area each day.

The Domain (Northwest Austin)

A lively, walkable area with great shopping, dining, and family activities.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream + Turf Space

Grab some ice cream and then let the kids burn off energy at the open turf area across from the Apple Store.

Lake Travis & Lake Austin

The Hill Country side of Austin, with water views at every turn.

The Oasis on Lake Travis

Savor Tex-Mex with breathtaking sunset views over Lake Travis. A great way to experience the scenic Hill Country vibe.

Ski Shores Cafe on Lake Austin

Casual waterfront dining with a fun, laid-back atmosphere.

Downtown & South Austin

Explore the heart of Austin, with vibrant areas like South Congress and Zilker Park.

Terry Black’s BBQ + Butler Metro Park

Enjoy world-famous brisket at Terry Black’s, then head across the street to Butler Park for a kid-friendly playground and open space to relax.

Güero’s Taco Bar + South Congress Stroll

Grab authentic Tex-Mex at Güero’s, then explore the eclectic shops and street art along South Congress Avenue—a quintessential Austin experience.

Barton Springs Pool + Zilker Eagle Train & Playground

Cool off at Barton Springs’ natural spring-fed pool, then let the kids enjoy the Zilker Eagle mini-train and nearby playground. A gem in Zilker Park, surrounded by great neighborhoods.

Zilker Eagle Mini-Train

All aboard! The little train loops through Zilker Park along Barton Creek and Lady Bird Lake, a ride toddlers and young kids love. Kids under 2 ride free. It runs Friday through Tuesday, with a midday break, so check the schedule.

Austin Nature & Science Center

A free nature center in Zilker Park with rescued animals, trails and the Dino Pit, where kids dig for fossil replicas.

Mueller

A newer, very walkable neighborhood built around parks and trails, about 10 minutes from Downtown.

Thinkery + Mueller Lake Park

Austin’s children’s museum is full of hands-on science and play. Afterward, walk to Mueller Lake Park for the playground and the path around the lake. On Sundays, the Mueller Farmers Market sets up nearby.

Central Austin

Classic, tree-shaded neighborhoods and green space just west of Downtown.

Pease Park Treehouse + Kingsbury Commons

A wooden treehouse built into the trees along Shoal Creek, with a splash pad and playground below. Easy to pair with lunch in nearby Clarksville.

Mayfield Park

A free, historic garden near Lake Austin where peacocks roam the grounds, plus short nature trails. Little kids love spotting the peacocks.

Southwest Austin & the Hill Country

Wide-open space, wildflowers and a short drive to the country.

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

The Luci and Ian Family Garden was designed for kids, with a stream to splash in, caves to explore and giant bird nests to climb into. Go in spring for the bluebonnets.

Austin Zoo

A small rescue zoo west of town, with a train ride and animals at kid height. An easy half day.

Neighborhoods to drive through

While you’re here, tour a few neighborhoods that are popular with families with babies, toddlers and elementary-age kids. Each link has homes for sale, schools and a market snapshot.

  • Mueller: Walkable streets, parks on every block and a strong community feel, about 10 minutes from Downtown.
  • Allandale: Classic mid-century homes on big, tree-shaded lots near parks and well-regarded schools.
  • Barton Hills: Next door to Zilker Park and the Barton Creek Greenbelt, with a neighborhood elementary school.
  • West Lake Hills: Eanes ISD schools, wooded lots and quick access to Downtown and the lakes.
  • Circle C Ranch: A master-planned community with pools, parks and miles of trails beside the Wildflower Center.
  • Steiner Ranch: Hill Country views, neighborhood pools and Lake Travis nearby, in Leander ISD.

Tips for your visit

  • Plan outdoor time for the morning. From June through September, afternoons regularly reach the high 90s or above.
  • Barton Springs stays about 68 degrees all year, so it’s refreshing in summer and bracing in winter. It closes for cleaning one day a week, so check the schedule.
  • Most Austin restaurants are casual and welcome kids, and many have patios and yards where little ones can move around.
  • Leave time to drive through a few neighborhoods at school pickup and on a weekend morning to see what daily life feels like.
