For couples, Austin is all about food, live music, and Hill Country escapes. A weekend here shows you how varied daily life can be, from walkable urban living near Downtown to quiet, scenic homes on the lakes. Here’s how I’d spend a weekend getting to know the city.
South Congress & Downtown
Boutique hotels, great restaurants and live music every night of the week.
Spend the afternoon on South Congress, then catch live music at the Continental Club, a South Austin landmark since 1955.
See a concert at ACL Live at the Moody Theater, home of Austin City Limits, or a show at the historic Paramount Theatre on Congress Avenue.
From spring through fall, watch more than a million bats fly out at dusk, then walk to dinner downtown.
South Lamar
Some of Austin’s best restaurants and its most famous dance hall, just south of Lady Bird Lake.
Uchi is Austin’s celebrated sushi restaurant, and Odd Duck serves creative small plates from local farms. Both are on South Lamar. Reserve ahead.
Take a dance lesson and two-step at Austin’s legendary honky-tonk, open since 1964.
East Austin & Rainey Street
Austin’s most creative dining and nightlife.
East Sixth and East Cesar Chavez are lined with standout restaurants, wine bars, breweries and distilleries. Great for a progressive dinner.
Historic bungalows turned into bars, with patios and food trucks, at the edge of Downtown.
Lake Austin & Lake Travis
The scenic, slower side of Austin.
Tex-Mex and margaritas with sweeping sunset views over Lake Travis.
A laid-back waterfront spot for lunch or a long afternoon.
A short climb to one of the best views of Lake Austin and the Pennybacker Bridge.
Hill Country day trip
Wineries, barbecue and small towns, all within an hour or so.
Drive out to Driftwood for family-style barbecue under the oaks, and add a winery tasting nearby.
The “Gateway to the Hill Country,” with distilleries, breweries and a charming downtown, about 30 minutes from Austin.
A longer day trip, about 90 minutes west: dozens of wineries along U.S. 290 and a historic German Main Street.

Tips for your visit
- Book dinner reservations a week or more ahead for popular restaurants, especially on weekends.
- Big events like SXSW in March, ACL Festival in October and Formula 1 in the fall fill hotels and raise prices. Check the calendar when you plan.
- Stay in a different area each night if you can. Downtown, South Congress and the lakes feel like different cities.
